Tired Manor House and disappointing meal

We went to Essborne Manor on 28th September. The hotel is tired looking and in need of a complete makeover. The 6 course tasting menu is TINY. We had to fill ourselves up with crisps and biscuits when we got back to our room. The dining room is very plain and ‘functional’. A male member of staff was rushing around so much (and unnecessarily too), we were not able to relax. However, the staff were very pleasant and one could describe the hotel as ‘quirky’. Overall, I would describe the experience as disappointing and would not recommend it.

Good Food

The taster menu food was very good well cooked and presented on the plate unlike the presentation from the waiting staff who need to match the head chefs talented commitment. Hotel needs updating but excellent setting so could be a real gem with a bit of attention to detail and a lot of cash spent revamping the building. Simon Derbyshire

Tasting menu

This was a gift for my husband. Afternoon tea was nice, but the scones were tiny so more would have been great. Lovely refurbished dining room. The tasting menu is a great idea and the food was delicious - compliments to the chef. However each course (apart from pudding) was served too quickly, which unfortunately made it feel like a conveyer belt, rather than the courses being spaced. The bedroom was lovely, spacious and clean. We had a four poster bed, however the mattress was rock hard and the pillows were so thin there was little padding left in them. We were given the Exeter Room which as we found out was above the kitchen and we had hardly any sleep due to kitchen noise both very late at night and very early morning. Pleasant hotel for a one night stop over.

Amazing food!

Esseborne manor is a nice place for an overnight stay. Room needs refurbishing and so does the communal parts of the house, but the food in the restaurant is exceptional!
