The Golden Fleece, Braughing, Hertfordshire
Stacey from Customer Service, July 2019
If you want to try a real gastro pub then the Golden Fleece is where you need to go. Set in the picturesque village of Braughing it really is worth the stop. The Golden Fleece has a beautiful beer garden which is suitable for couples, ladies who lunch and families. The day my partner and I went was a typical British day (raining) however we could still enjoy the outside facilities as there was plenty of cover.
This location offers a two course meal either a starter and main or main and dessert. With the set menu you can choose any main up to the value of £17.95 from their extensive range. If you wish you can even pay the difference to upgrade to a more expensive main.
The menu itself offered some traditional pub dishes with a fine dining twist. My partner enjoyed courgette crisps to start which was just the right size to get your taste buds going. For mains I picked the Tart of the Week, courgette and bacon served with salad, homemade coleslaw and new potatoes. My partner opted for the traditional pub favourite a burger, the twist being a Spaghetti Bolognese homemade burger patty inside a ciabatta bun severed with fresh chunky chips, coleslaw and house salad. As everything is cooked fresh we were able to relax in between courses and enjoy the beautiful venue.
I opted to have a dessert instead of a starter to feed my sweet tooth. The dessert menu offered everything from a modern take on crumble, to Mango and Malibu Panna Cotta. I decided to try the White Chocolate Cheesecake with Ginger severed with Raspberry Sorbet and this did not disappoint.
The overall atmosphere at the Golden Fleece was very relaxed and you did not feel rushed to leave. The staff made sure you were happy and comfortable without interrupting your meal.
Braughing really is a beautiful village with lots of history and great walks, I would highly recommend taking some time to walk around.
The Chequers of Orwell (Orwell, Cambridgeshire)
Verity from National Accounts, November 2017
I cannot rave about this place enough, absolutely amazing food and fantastic service. They could not accommodate us anymore, and wanted to make sure that we had a lovely enjoyable meal. We arrived at the venue and had a drink at the bar, we were then seated and had our delicious two course meal within a relaxing, yet lively atmosphere. The Chequers menu, decor and atmosphere truly exemplifies what it means to be a gastro pub!
I would highly recommend the classic British fish and chips!
